Early Years Program
Early Years at Richmond Schools:
Introduction
At Richmond Schools, we believe that every child deserves a strong, joyful, and secure start to their learning journey. Early childhood is a critical period in which children develop the foundations for lifelong learning, wellbeing, and success. A safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment enables young learners to grow with confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging.
Our Early Years programme is aligned with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) philosophy and reflects the belief that children learn best through inquiry, play, exploration, and meaningful relationships. Learning experiences are carefully designed to support the holistic development of each child—socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively.
A Holistic and Connected Curriculum
Learning in the Early Years at Richmond Schools is concept-driven and interconnected. Children develop skills, understanding, and attitudes across multiple areas of learning through integrated experiences rather than isolated subjects. A balance of teacher-guided and child-initiated learning allows children to take ownership of their learning while being supported and guided by skilled educators.
Our programme focuses on nurturing curiosity, building relationships, and developing the skills children need to become confident learners. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting children’s ability to communicate, collaborate, and develop independence.
Key Areas of Early Learning
In line with IB Early Years principles, learning experiences support children’s development across broad and interconnected areas, including:
• Personal, social, and emotional development
• Communication and language development
• Physical development and wellbeing
These areas are strengthened and extended through experiences in literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and creative expression, allowing children to apply their learning in meaningful and authentic contexts.
How Children Learn
At Richmond Schools, we recognize that play is central to learning. Through play-based and inquiry-led experiences, children explore ideas, test theories, solve problems, and make sense of the world around them. Learning environments are designed to encourage exploration, creativity, and collaboration.
Children are supported to:
• Explore and investigate with confidence
• Remain engaged and motivated when facing challenges
• Develop their own ideas and make connections between learning experiences
Educators play an active role in guiding learning by observing, questioning, encouraging reflection, and providing opportunities that extend children’s thinking.
Early Literacy and Numeracy
Early literacy and numeracy are developed through engaging, developmentally appropriate approaches that build strong foundations. Phonics, early reading, writing, and mathematical thinking are introduced through hands-on experiences, stories, games, and real-life contexts. Children are encouraged to experiment, ask questions, and learn without fear of making mistakes, fostering a positive attitude toward learning.
A Caring and Supportive Learning Community
Our Early Years classrooms are supported by a dedicated team of experienced teachers and teaching assistants who prioritize each child’s wellbeing, learning, and safety. Strong relationships between adults and children ensure that every learner feels known, supported, and valued throughout the school day.
Through clear expectations and shared values, children learn to care for themselves, others, and their environment, developing self-confidence and social responsibility from an early age.
Purposeful Learning Environments
Early Years students learn in bright, spacious, open-plan environments designed to support inquiry and play-based learning. Classrooms are enriched with natural and stimulating resources and are supported by outdoor learning areas that extend opportunities for exploration and physical development. Children move freely between learning areas, selecting resources and activities that support their interests and learning goals.
This carefully planned environment lays the foundation for children to become active, confident, and reflective learners, ready to continue their journey within the IB Primary Years Programme.
