Middle Years Programs

Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Richmond Schools:

Introduction

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Richmond Schools is a rigorous, concept-driven and inquiry-based programme designed for students aged 11 to 16. The programme builds upon the foundations established in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students for the academic, personal, and intellectual demands of the Diploma Programme (DP). Guided by the IB philosophy, the MYP develops students as active learners who are capable of critical thinking, reflection, and responsible action in a global context.
Teaching and learning in the MYP are structured around key and related concepts and framed through global contexts, enabling students to connect disciplinary knowledge to real-world situations. The programme emphasizes learner agency, international-mindedness, and the development of the IB Learner Profile attributes across all subject groups.

MYP Subject Groups

The MYP curriculum at Richmond Schools includes the eight IB subject groups, ensuring a broad and balanced education:

Language and Literature

Students develop advanced communication skills through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The curriculum emphasizes critical analysis, interpretation of texts, and effective expression of ideas across a range of genres and cultural perspectives.

Language Acquisition

Language learning focuses on developing communication skills in additional languages, promoting intercultural understanding and global awareness. Students progress through language phases appropriate to their proficiency levels.

Individuals and Societies

This subject group integrates disciplines such as history, geography, economics, and global studies. Students examine human systems, relationships, and global challenges, developing analytical skills and an understanding of multiple perspectives.

Sciences

Sciences in the MYP promote inquiry, experimentation, and conceptual understanding across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Students explore scientific principles, systems, and the impact of science and technology on society and the environment.

Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. Students apply mathematical knowledge to real-life situations and develop confidence in using mathematics as a tool for inquiry and decision-making.

Arts

Through visual arts, music, drama, and other creative disciplines, students express ideas, emotions, and cultural understanding. The arts foster creativity, risk-taking, reflection, and appreciation of diverse artistic traditions.

Physical and Health Education

This subject group supports physical wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, and social development. Students develop movement skills, teamwork, resilience, and an understanding of personal health and wellbeing.

Design

Design empowers students to become innovative problem-solvers through the design cycle. Learners identify needs, develop ideas, create solutions, and evaluate outcomes, applying creativity, technology, and critical thinking.

Approaches to Learning (ATL)

The development of ATL skills is a core component of the MYP at Richmond Schools. ATL skills—thinking, communication, research, social, and self-management—are explicitly taught, practiced, and assessed across all subject groups. These skills support students in becoming independent, reflective learners who are prepared for lifelong learning.

Assessment and Reflection

Assessment in the MYP is criterion-related, transparent, and aligned with IB assessment objectives. Teachers use a balanced approach to formative and summative assessment to support learning and measure achievement. Ongoing feedback and reflection enable students to understand expectations, evaluate their progress, and set goals for improvement. Assessment practices emphasize learning as a process and encourage students to take responsibility for their academic growth.

Interdisciplinary Learning and Action

Interdisciplinary learning is an essential feature of the MYP at Richmond Schools. Students engage in planned interdisciplinary units that help them make connections across subject groups and apply knowledge in meaningful contexts. Opportunities for action, service, and community engagement encourage students to use their learning to make a positive impact.

MYP Projects and Programme Continuity

As a culmination of their MYP experience, students complete the MYP Personal Project, demonstrating their ability to plan, research, reflect, and take action independently. The project showcases the development of ATL skills and learner profile attributes.
The MYP at Richmond Schools ensures continuity across the IB continuum by aligning pedagogy, assessment, and learner expectations with both the PYP and DP. This coherence supports a smooth transition between programmes and prepares students to succeed academically, socially, and ethically in future learning.

At Richmond School, we believe that education is the key to a brighter future. We provide an inspiring and supportive learning environment that helps students unlock their full potential, both academically and personally.
